The HEPA filter is the white pleated filter that is the main part of the filter. The charcoal/carbon pre-filter is the black spongy filter that attaches to the pre-filter. When you order a new filter, you will receive both the HEPA filter and the pre-filter in 1 box as they are considered 1 filter. The entire filter (HEPA and pre-filter) should be replaced every 6-8 months depending on use.
The charcoal/carbon pre-filter collects large particles such as hair, lint and larger dust particles. It will get dirty much more quickly than the HEPA filter. We do recommend vacuuming off the pre-filter monthly or more often if you would like to help extend the life of the filter.
For some of our units, we do sell replacement charcoal/carbon pre-filters (typically in a 4-pack) that you can purchase so that you can replace that part more often. You do NOT have to replace the charcoal/carbon pre-filter if you do not want to as you will receive a new one when you purchase a HEPA filter, but we do sell them for customers that want to change them out more often.
