When the humidifier is running but you notice the humidity level in your home is not increasing in accordance, there are several factors to consider:
1) The circulation of air is very high. When air is exchanged throughout the day, this can cause the humidifier to start from scratch each time delaying efficiency.
2) The insulation in the home is not adequate or has an open floor plan with high ceilings. This can lead the humidifier to run much longer to increase the humidity level cause the area being humidified is much larger.
3) If there is a large difference between the outside temperature and temperature inside of the home - the colder the air the less moisture it is capable of holding. Conversely the warmer the air the lower the percentage of relative humidity (see article for relative humidity)
Think of the air molecules as a sponge. A sponge can only hold so much water which is similar to air molecules.
